10th March 2006
Thanks to the generosity of Newport Pigeon Racing fraternity, a cheque for a £1,000 was given to the St Anne's Hospice in Malpas. This follows a donation of £7,000 made a few years ago by the same group.
Warm appreciation was expressed for the donation. The Hospice movement relies entirely on gifts for its core funding. Pigeon racing is a popular local sport but is not recognised as a 'sport' by the Welsh Assembly.
The cheque was presented by Ray Strawbridge and Jim Hagan to Sister Bernice O'Dwyer Matron and Christine Harris, Ann Peggiton, Jane Pearce, and Morfydd Bowen staff and members of the fundraising group.
The contribution of the late Tony Banks MP to defending the interests of the pigeon racing world was fondly remembered. His father was a pigeon afficiando and Tony always carried bird seed in his top pocket, on the off chance of meeting a passing pigeon.
